Why Your Roof’s Underlayment is so Important

Your roof is more than just your asphalt shingles. On the contrary, it is made up of several important components each working together to afford your house the best protection possible. One vital but often overlooked element of your roofing system is the underlayment since it is hidden away from view. So, in today’s post, the roof and gutter repair experts over at Chase Roofing LLC explains exactly why your underlayment is so important.

What Is Roof Underlayment?

As the name suggests, your roof underlayment is a water-resistant or water-proof material that is installed underneath all the other roofing materials. Its main purpose is to serve as a barrier to prevent water from entering your home. Think of it as your roof’s final line of defense from water damage.

Depending on your local building codes, roof underlayment is not always required. However, there is no logical reason for you or your roof repair contractor to forego installing one. Even if you do not live in an area that sees a lot of rainfall, your asphalt shingles may not be enough to keep you and your home protected. Besides, your shingles already have their own job – which is to reflect the rays of the sun, withstand the wind, and block precipitation – without having to worry about any excess moisture or leakage.

There are three main types of roofing underlayment: asphalt-saturated felt, synthetic underlayment and rubberized asphalt underlayment. While they all serve the same purpose, the thing to keep in mind is that asphalt-saturated felt and synthetic underlayment are water-resistant while rubberized asphalt underlayment is waterproof.
